Due to well-defined sorption and ion exchange characteristics, bentonite is widely used in water purification and industrial wastewater. High efficiency of water purification is shown by sorbents obtained on the basis of activated bentonite PBMB grade. Using of such sorbents ensures removal of suspended particles with an efficiency of up to 100%, reduction of chemical oxygen consumption level by 99%, and removal of heavy metals, including Cr (VI) by 95%. In addition, the wastewater color is eliminated. It is also important that bentonite itself presents no danger to human health, is non-combustible and non-toxic.

Bentonite paste of 20% concentration is prepared in hot water (~90 degrees celsius). The paste rests for 16-20 hours, then the volume of contaminated water is treated with this paste at the rate of 10-40 kg of bentonite per 1m3 of the mixture obtained. Then stir for 30 minutes and leave the reaction mixture for maturation. During the maturation of the mixture, bentonite with contaminants adsorbed on it flocculates and settles to the bottom of the reservoir. For the precipitation acceleration, the estimated amount of flocculant - polyacrylamide or polyoxyethylene is added to the mixture. The precipitate obtained containing adsorbed harmful impurities is squeezed and sent for further processing or disposal.
