NEW BENTONITE AND POLYMER PRODUCTS FOR AGGLOMERATING METALLURGICAL RAW MATERIALS AND FOUNDRY INDUSTRY

Metallurgical industry.

LLC «Bentonite Khakassia» in 2014 mastered the production of new types of binder materials for pelletizing, agglomeration and briquetting iron ore concentrates and waste from processing and metallurgical production on the basis of the combined bentonite and interpolymer additives. Combined bentonites are a combination of high-quality activated bentonite and mineral, organic or synthetic additives in controlled proportions.

Depending on the tasks to be solved in the production of pellets of iron ore concentrate by ore mining and processing enterprise it is possible to use following materials as additives: aluminum-containing components (bauxite, kaolin clay), calcium-containing materials (limestone, chalk, lime, fluorspar), magnesia materials (carbonate magnesium, serpentinite, dolomite), boron-containing components, carbonaceous materials (coal mining waste, coke, petcoke, peat), feldspar minerals and a number of other mineral, synthetic and organic substances. Thus, the use of aluminum-containing combined bentonite in fluxed pellets production can significantly increase their cold crushing strength and reduce abrasion. (ris.1, 2).

Application of magnesia bentonites can reduce the sulfur content in the pellets and improve their metallurgical properties.

Carbonaceous bentonites improve the solid-phase sintering at pellets firing by creating additional internal heat effect.

Combined interpolymer binders (CIB), in addition to some combination of low viscosity and high viscosity polymers, also contain similar mineral, organic and synthetic ingredients as microadditives. Physico-chemical properties of interpolymer binders allow using as microadditives chemically pure substances, which significantly increases their effectiveness. Furthermore, the change of viscosity of the polymer substance in a wide range allows to concentrate microadditives in the central part of a pellet (viscous substance), or on its surface (low viscosity substance), or spread it evenly in a pellet.

The use of combined CIB with microadditives allows to reduce consumption of base binder material – bentonite to 25% while maintaining the strength properties of the raw and baked pellets, optimize granulometric composition of wet pellet with a maximum yield of conditioned fractions, decrease abrasion of fired pellets while maintaining regulatory cold compressive strength, improve their metallurgical properties.

In the production of agglomerate CIB improve pelletizing ability of charge and its pelletizing that determines the optimal conditions for sintering. As a result, the finished agglomerate has enhanced strength, which reduces the formation of fine and silty fractions in case of overload (Figure 3,4).

In the briquetting metallurgical waste powdered variants of combined CIB successfully compete with traditionally used solutions of lignosulfonate and liquid glass (Figure 5,6)

New binding materials passed laboratory and pilot approbation at Donskoj GOK (pellets, screening of pellets, briquettes), UMMC (pellets), EVRAZ KGOK (pellets, agglomerate), Karelskiy Okatysh (pellets), Mikhailovsky GOK (pellets) and other metallurgical, ore mining and processing enterprizes.

Foundry industry.

Due to the development of the research program in the field of carbon-bentonite molding materials and technologies of their preparation LLC «Bentonite Khakassia» produces a new effective compound for manufacturing iron castings in sandy-argillaceous forms - bentonite gel powder «Bentakarb» (TC 2164-003-01424676 -2014). Bentonite powder with antiburning-on additives has been successfully used by Russian foundries for the production of iron casting for the past 3 years.

Following materials are used in the preparation of «Bentakarb» material: activated bentonite brand P1T1 from deposit «10th Khutor» and carbonaceous material, providing an increase in both physical and mechanical and antiburning-on properties of the molding sand. Optimally processed compositions «Bentakarb» help to reduce the cost of production of iron casting by reducing the total consumption of binder and antiburning additives used in molding sand preparation by traditional technologies.

The main factors of the using new integrated bentonite-carbon products:

  • high binding and anti-burning properties;
  • reduction of total consumption of molding materials (bentonite and carbon antiburning additive);
  • reducing bunker and dispensing systems in molding sand preparation;
  • excluding operations of pre-mixing additives directly at the foundry;
  • providing qualitative distribution of the components in the molding sand;
  • excluding spontaneous combustion of carbon containing antiburning additives during keeping in the warehouse;
  • optimization of logistics issues.

«Bentakarb» material significantly outperforms the strength properties of bentonite brand P1T1A (GOST 28177-89) from deposit «10th Khutor», delivered at the present time on the foundries of the Russian Federation. Physical and mechanical structure and moisture of the material are similar to the complex bentonite-carbon materials: MAXICARB - AMCOL SPECIALTY MINERALS, POLYCOL and ANTRAPUR - HUTTENES ALBERTUS and S B Minerals (Germany).

Antiburning efficiency of the carbon component of «Bentakarb» is similar to the high effective additives with the output of «lustrous carbon» not less than 11%: «Antrapur 200 RU» by company «S B Industrial Minerals» (Germany).

Technology of use of the «Bentakarb» additive does not require re-equipment or modernization of technical equipment. It is added into the molding sand in dry form or with the clay suspension. Experts in the casting material of «Bentonite Khakassia» provide technological support at the production stages of pilot testing and during the whole time of its further use.

Main technical characteristics of «Bentakarb» additive:
