Bentonite is used to prepare drilling fluid. When mixed with water, bentonite clay forms a viscous gel-like suspension, which is a basis for a drilling fluid. During well construction, the drilling fluid is pumped through the well to remove the drilled rock, lubricate and cool the bit and for other specific drilling tasks.

The important property of bentonite drilling fluid is that it muds up the well walls and ensures their stability.

When the circulation of drilling fluid stops, the mud suspension keeps the drilled rock from settling, which prevents the formation of “plugs” in the well shaft and therefore the accidents.

A characteristic feature of bentonite clay, as a natural material, is its complete environmental safety.

An interesting fact: to prepare a drilling fluid of a given viscosity, only 50 kg of bentonite powder is added to 1 m3 of water, and to construct a well 100 m deep, less than 15 m3 of such a solution is required.
